Is social media optimization just another pancake wrapped sausage?

“Search is still the king,” according to Sventlana Gladkova of Profy.com:

[from 5 Social Media Revelations from Web 2.0 Expo in New York]

Basically the lesson is that no matter how much we may be disappointed, search engine optimization still should be one of the most important focuses for anyone trying to make a website visible - so before you start investing your time in posting dozens of tweets and hundreds of FriendFeed comments in hopes of promoting your content, think about SEO first and make sure it is perfect.

But wait. Is website visibility and ranking high in the search engines the only goal of social networking? Of course, links pay the bills so the obvious next step is to wrap them up in something no one can resist and march your tasty links back out there for mass consumption. But I’m not so sure visibility is the only gain to be had from social networking.

I realize likening sausage-links to url-links is a stretch, but there’s a reason why the quip too much of a good thing resonates in nearly every aspect of our lives today; from food to technology, we are experiencing a glut of optimization where deep fried, super sized, traffic building and increased page rank are not only better they are king!

WTH.

If a friend of mine in “real life” became a walking commercial, I’m afraid I would politely excuse myself from the table. In my eyes, social networking is no different from developing and sustaining friendships offline: they take time, patience, honesty and commitment. I can’t put a price tag on a tweet any sooner than I could tell you how much I thought my conversation with my best friend at the coffee shop was worth.

Not everything needs to optimized for financial gain. If website visibility is your end game, then by all mean, SEO it up. But if building lasting relationships and community around yourself, your products, or a business is what matters, perhaps you should be wary of the pancake wrapped sausage links.
