I first read about Socialmedian in Nick Wilsdon’s review, First Impressions Of The Next Big Thing. His words, “I really like the level of maturity and number of professionals in this community,” were enough to sway me to sign up for the shiny new toy. It’s day four that I’ve been tinkering around with the platform; it’s quite easy to use with a focus on creating social news networks in the areas you’re passionate about. It has the familiar bells & whistles such as social submissions, voting, commenting, news aggregations, sharing and groups. Additionally, they send out a daily digest of hot news clips in your area of interest and email notifications when other people clip or comment on your submissions and when people choose to follow your updates. These great features allow everyone an opportunity to network with like-minded peeps. With only a few weeks out from their public launch, the developers seem quite open to suggestions asking the community which features social median should build first? As of a few days ago, the priorities appear to be:
1. auto-share your socialmedian activity onto FriendFeed. 2. Import my blog to my socialmedian page. 3. RSS enable every page on socialmedian. 4. Put a socialmedian widget on my blog with my recent stories. Is Socialmedian Sticky? My initial impression is that SocialMedian is a toy that’s not about to get old anytime soon. In the limited time I’ve spent on the site, Wilsdon’s assessment is spot on; the community at large is professional and amicable and users are submitting relevant and timely new clips. Once you join a few news groups and follow people clipping news stories you enjoy, the navigation of the site feels very intuitive, reflecting areas that interest you without having to trudge through hundreds of unrelated posts. I realize everyone has a different aesthetic for the way they review and aggregate news. As an early adopter of this service, I’m very pleased with the design of the site, and I strongly believe Socialmedian reflects the new era of media consumption; a time when information and news is gathered and shared by people in a personalized way.
