Ning-nong, another social network is calling. Creating your own social network has never been easier with Ning, an online platform where users create their own social websites and social networks. Co-founded by Marc Anderssen (after Netscape and Opsware) and Gina Bianchini, the company launched in October 2005 and has never looked back.

With two primary business models, Ning allows users to create a network for free, in exchange for ads that Ning supplies or “Ning for Business” allowing users to control ad content in exchange for a monthly fee. In late 2007, Ning announced support for OpenSocial API which allows developers to run OpenSocial gadgets within their networks. According to the
Ning Blog, the company now hosts more than 185,000 networks. With those figures it’s time to dive in….

Rooting through their listings of some of the popular social networks on Ning right now, they seem to cover the gamut of communities from lovers of any hobby, to university alums, to fans of other social networks to industry related groups. With the proliferation of online communities with which to profile-up and orbit around, it begs the question, how are people choosing which social networks to involve themselves with and why? So, I put the question to you, our lovely PromotionalMagazine community.
