I dugg this article a few days ago called, 50 Thoughtful, Funny and Polemic Blogging Quotes, a compilation of ponderings about blogging, writing, the Internet and musings about what we’re all doing with this particular type of publishing technology. It spun me round and shot me directly into that space I float around in at least once a week - the nebulous sea of what the heck am I doing here? Well, I have a confession to make; the only thing I know is that I don’t know a thing.
Ostensibly, I am sharing great information, creating compelling content and being an active and thoughtful participant in the online conversation. But if I am being honest with myself, I have to question the truly compelling nature of my tweets about bad watermelon slices or links to tunes that strike my fancy. Don’t get me wrong, I think I have infectious taste in snacks and music but I often find myself tapping the screen as if to say, “Is this thing working? I mean, is there anyone out there?” Lately, I have this fantasy about video blogging; taking a video camera phone with me everywhere I go in order to share my world in real time. I want to share the universe I discover not found in front of a flat screen navigated with mouse and keyboard but the dreamscape of a life as seen through my eyes; a world wrought with the ugly, the sublime, the fascinating, and the mundane. And deep inside the apex of my innovative imagination a tiny little voice of doubt creeps in and whispers why you? Well, the absolute awesome thing about all of this – blogging, writing, sharing, visualizing, spinning, creating – is that we all have a thread to weave into the greater scheme. It’s not about perfection but rather voice; it’s not about selling but rather authenticity. No matter what anyone tells you, there is certain poetry to engaging with people and we should not try to chase the audience. If our commitment is too authenticity, in whatever format we choose to share the world, then our confessions will be genuine and our audience will find us. Maybe the question is not what the heck are we doing here but rather how real are we all being here?
