The TimesOnline reports Facebook’s Scrabulous application may be in trouble with Hasbro’s Scrabble. According to Times report, lawyers said that, should it decide to bring legal action against Facebook, Hasbro would have a strong case. Hasbro alleges Scrabulous may be unreasonably tapping into revenues that are rightfully their own.

Scrabulous was launched by Jayant and Rajat Agarwalla back in 2006 and currently boasts an alarming 2.3 million active users. The notice sent to the Agarwalla brothers sends a threat to the highly visible application that generated more that 70 million pageviews last month. What is to become of the beloved application?

Facebook fans of Scrabulous are already swinging into action with a growing number of Save Scrabulous! groups – eight to date. However, the outcome of the allegation remains unclear. We can still play the game and I can continue to get smacked down by my friends. The Times article reports that Facebook will not comment on legal matters, and a spokesman for Hasbro was not immediately available.

Apparently, when you create an application with the ability to generate a growing number of pageviews, someone is going to come a knockin’ to get their slice of the pie. But really, can’t we all just get along? Advertisers and marketers around the world are positioning themselves to leverage these popular social networking communities into revenue generating portals. Facebook has yet to reveal their plans on how they plan to make money off their huge audience. Mark Zuckerberg tells 60 Minutes that as a private company, they do not have to report to the outside world all of our financials. Zuckerberg, said to be worth $3 billion, still boasts a modest wardrobe and lives in one bedroom apartment with a mattress on the floor. But if FB applications are being targeted by big brand names to give them a piece of the action, it seems only obvious that the popular social networking community of Facebook is a highly lucrative place.
